How to count your baby's kicks

  1. Choose a time your baby is usually active.
  2. Lie on your left side or sit comfortably with your feet up.
  3. Tap the button for every kick, roll, swish or jab.
  4. Stop when you reach 10 movements and note how long it took.

Over a few days you will learn what is normal for your baby. A change from that pattern matters more than any single number.

Kick counting FAQ

When should I start counting kicks?

Many providers suggest starting daily kick counts at around 28 weeks, or earlier if you are at higher risk. Before then, movements are often too irregular to count.

How many kicks should I feel?

A common guide is to feel 10 movements within 2 hours, and many babies get there much faster. What matters most is your baby's own normal pattern. Kicks, rolls, swishes and jabs all count; hiccups do not.

What should I do if my baby is moving less?

Contact your doctor, midwife or maternity unit right away if your baby is moving less than usual, if you have not felt 10 movements in 2 hours, or if the pattern changes. Do not wait until the next day, and do not use a home heartbeat monitor to reassure yourself.

When is the best time to count?

Pick a time when your baby is usually active, often after a meal or in the evening. Lie on your left side or sit with your feet up and focus on movements.

Reduced movements are an emergency. If your baby is moving less than usual, call your provider or maternity unit now.
