Your baby at 1 week
In week 1 there is no baby yet. Pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), so the first two "weeks" of pregnancy happen before you conceive. Your body is shedding last cycle's uterine lining and getting a new egg ready to mature.
Your body at 1 week
This week is your period. Hormones (FSH and estrogen) start ripening a group of follicles in your ovaries, and one of them will usually become the egg you release around day 14 of a 28-day cycle.
Common symptoms at 1 week pregnant
- Your usual period
- Cramps and lower back ache
- Tiredness
Every pregnancy is different. Having none of these symptoms is normal too.
Tips for week 1
- Start a prenatal vitamin with at least 400 mcg of folic acid now; it lowers the risk of neural tube defects.
- Note the first day of your period: it is what your due date will be calculated from.
- Cut back on alcohol and stop smoking if you are trying to conceive.

1 Week Pregnant: your questions answered
How many months is 1 week pregnant?
1 week pregnant is month 1 of your pregnancy, in the first trimester. Your due date is 39 weeks away.
Are you actually pregnant at 1 week?
No. Pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last period, so in week 1 you are having your period and have not conceived yet. Conception usually happens about two weeks later.
