Third trimester checklist: everything to do before baby arrives
A week-by-week third trimester checklist covering appointments, vaccines, the hospital bag, the car seat, the nursery and planning for the first weeks.

The third trimester runs from week 28 until your baby is born. It can feel like there is a lot to do, so here it is in order. This is the same checklist the Prego app shows in its third-trimester to-do list.
Weeks 28 to 31
- Appointments every 2 weeks from now, with blood pressure, urine and fundal height checks.
- Start daily kick counts. Get to know your baby's pattern, and call straight away if it changes. Try our kick counter.
- Anti-D injection around 28 weeks if you are Rh negative.
- Tdap (whooping cough) vaccine between 27 and 36 weeks.
- Iron check. Your provider may recheck your blood count.
- Sign up for childbirth and breastfeeding classes.
- Start your baby shopping list. See our newborn essentials checklist.
- Choose a pediatrician or check how your baby's care will work.
Weeks 32 to 35
- Write your birth plan and talk it through with your provider. Our birth plan guide has a template.
- Ask about the RSV vaccine (32 to 36 weeks, seasonal in some countries).
- Pack your hospital bag by week 35. Use our hospital bag checklist.
- Install the car seat and have it checked. You won't be able to drive your baby home without one.
- Pre-register at your hospital or birth center.
- Plan your route and who will look after older children or pets.
- Wash baby clothes and bedding in a gentle detergent.
Weeks 36 to birth
- Weekly appointments from 36 weeks.
- Group B strep swab at 36 to 37 weeks.
- Check your baby's position. If your baby is breech, ask about your options.
- Learn the signs of labor and the 5-1-1 rule. Read signs of labor and keep our contraction timer handy.
- Set up a safe sleep space: a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet and nothing else in the crib.
- Batch-cook and freeze easy meals.
- Plan for the first weeks: who will help, how you will feed your baby, and when your postpartum check-up is.
- Rest. Put your feet up whenever you can.
Warning signs that need a call right away
Don't wait for your next appointment if you have reduced baby movements, bleeding, fluid leaking, regular contractions before 37 weeks, a severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling of your face or hands, or pain high in your belly.
